What you are asking each person to do

Role by role, so everyone knows upfront exactly what is being asked of them.
The person who knows the job
Installs one app, then does the job once the way they always do it — judgement calls included, not just the clicks. No script, no talking to camera, no writing anything up afterwards. It is the only step in the whole process that costs anybody time.
The person who checks it is right
Reads what came back in a browser, fixes anything wrong, presses approve. No install at all.
Everyone who follows the procedure
Opens it from a link in a browser, with nothing to install. Free on Team — you pay for the people who create procedures, not the ones who rely on them.
The person who asks how it is done
Asks Steptree AI in the Steptree App, or Claude, Codex or GitHub Copilot, and gets the answer from your own SOPs. Steptree AI can also do the steps with them, one approved step at a time.
The manager who is not at their desk
Opens the procedure from its link on a phone, on site, instead of ringing the one person who knows it.

The hardest part is choosing which job to record first

Pick the one only one person can do. It costs you the most when they are away, and the person doing it understands it best. It also gives you the clearest before-and-after to judge the next twenty by.

Before you install anything

What does my team actually have to install?
For most people, nothing — the library, the reviewing and the approving all happen in a browser. Recording needs the Steptree App or the Recording App, on Windows or macOS, and either one records web work too. Letting Steptree AI work your applications needs the Steptree App.
Is this an IT project?
No. One person can record a procedure and have it written up before lunch, without anyone else being involved. Nothing needs to be rolled out to the company before it is useful to the first team.
Is anything captured that shouldn't be?
Password and secure fields are skipped as the recording happens, so they are never captured. Emails and card numbers are stripped from the recorded text before it is stored, and from Pro up you can add your own patterns. Screenshots are kept as taken, usually of just the window you are working in, and any step can be deleted before the SOP is written.
Can I record on a phone?
No. A phone is the right place to read an SOP on site and leave a comment on it, and the wrong place to capture a process. The phone apps are in early access.
Do the apps update themselves?
They download updates in the background and wait until you say so, and they will not interrupt a recording to do it.
