SOPs with the goal, the steps and the judgement calls

A draft written from one recording, checked and approved by someone who knows the job. Share it as a link, and connect Claude, Codex or Cursor so your AI reads the same library.

What a procedure holds

The goal, the steps, and the judgement

A click-trail records what was done. A procedure records why.
  • The goal, then the steps

Every SOP opens with what the job is for, so it explains the point of the work rather than narrating keystrokes. Then numbered steps, with screenshots under them.

  • Values that change, and rules that always apply

What differs each time you do the job, such as a date or an amount, and what must hold every time, each written down on its own.

  • Decision points

Each judgement call you flagged, with the reason you gave, stored as its own kind of content rather than buried in a step somebody has to interpret.

  • Things to know

The notes you flagged while recording: what a screen means, which record is the right one, the trap that catches a first-timer.

  • Edit it like a doc, or record it again

Fix a step, add a caveat, reorder anything. When a screen changes, record the job again and you have a new draft in minutes.

Library / Finance / Month-end reconciliation

Month-end reconciliation

Goal

Get the accounts and the payment system to agree to the cent, with every difference either explained or passed on, before the 3rd.

Steps

  1. 1Download last month's settlement report from the payment provider.
  2. 2Load it into the accounts and run the automatic match.
  3. 3Work through whatever didn't match, oldest first.

Decision point

A gap over $500 that isn't just a timing difference — Send it to the controller instead of writing it off. At that size it has usually happened before.

Things to know

The provider's report uses UTC and the accounts use local time, so the last few hours of the month always look unmatched on the first pass.

What you end up with

Approved by a person, shared with a link, read by your AI

  • Your AI asks it instead of guessing

Claude, Codex, GitHub Copilot or Steptree AI can ask your own library “how do we do this here?”, instead of you pasting procedures into a chat. The answer comes from the SOP your team wrote down.

  • Nothing publishes itself

A generated SOP is a first pass by something that watched the work. It reaches your team only when a person says it is right: its owner, a manager of its team or an admin.

  • Share it with a link

Keep an SOP private, share it with its team, or make a public link anyone can open without signing in. On Free, a public page carries a small Made with Steptree footer.

  • Yours as a SKILL.md file

An SOP can be compiled to SKILL.md — plain markdown in an open format other tools already read. It downloads on any plan, free included, with nothing proprietary in it.

  • Folders, tags and comments

One library for the business, organised the way your teams are. An SOP belongs to a team, which decides who may read, edit or approve it, and its members can comment on it.

  • Search by title, or just ask

Find an SOP by its title, or ask your AI in plain English. It reads every word of every SOP and can point you to the one it used, so the answer is checkable.

Your AI reads it where you already work

Connect Claude over MCP, the standard AI tools use to connect, and it can search and read every SOP in your library. That is on every plan, the free one included, because reading your own documents makes no AI call. In the Steptree App, the model Steptree AI uses is your choice too — see no model lock-in.

Questions

About the library

Is this just a wiki with extra steps?
A wiki waits for somebody to write the page. Steptree writes it from one run-through, with the goal and the judgement calls, and a person approves it. When a screen changes, record the job again and you have a new draft in minutes. And your AI reads it, so the answer to “how do we do this here?” comes from it.
Who can see an SOP?
SOPs belong to teams, and access follows team membership. A public link is a choice somebody makes for one SOP. Every workspace's library is separated inside the database itself, not by application code remembering to check.
Can I read my library in the AI tools I already use?
Yes, on every plan. Steptree publishes your procedures, skills and recordings over MCP. Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and GitHub Copilot in VS Code each have a setup guide. You mint the token yourself, scoped read-only or read-write, tied to your own membership and expiring on a date you set. Reading your own documents makes no AI call, so it costs nothing and is not gated.
What format are SOPs stored in?
Rich documents in the app, which you edit like any other document. Any one can be compiled to SKILL.md: YAML frontmatter and markdown, which downloads as a plain file other AI tools already read.
Can I write an SOP by hand?
Yes. Start from a blank SOP and write it in the editor; a blank skill works the same way. Recording is the fast way in, not the only one.
What happens to my library if I stop paying?
Nothing is deleted when a paid plan ends. The workspace moves to Free and keeps every SOP, which you can still open, edit and share, and your AI can still read over MCP. Every skill you compiled still downloads as a SKILL.md file. Each person can also download a copy of their own data from Settings, including the SOPs they created. There is no PDF or Word export.

Where to go from here

  • How a procedure gets written

From pressing record to an approved document, with every stage and every decision a person makes.

  • The two apps

Record in either one. The Steptree App adds Steptree AI; the Recording App is for the AI you already use.

  • How your data is kept

What is never recorded, what a screenshot keeps, and how workspaces are separated.

Do one real job once, and read the SOP Steptree writes

Record it on Windows or Mac. Steptree writes the SOP with the goal, the steps and the judgement calls. Approve it, share it with your team, and connect your AI. Free to start, no card.
