In more detail

What you get at each stage, and what you decide

Six stages, with the question people ask next answered in place.

  1. You do the job once

    Every click, every field, the text of what you interacted with, and a picture of each screen — plus two things a screen recorder cannot infer. Before you start you say what the job is FOR, in one line. While you work you can stop and log a decision you just made (what you chose and why) or a note about a screen that needs explaining. Password and secure fields are skipped as it happens. Emails and card numbers are stripped from the recorded text before it is stored.

    Recording uses either desktop app, the Steptree App or the Recording App, on Windows or Mac.

  2. Steptree writes the SOP, in minutes

    You press Create. The steps, the goal and the decisions go to a model as structured input, and what comes back is a structured SOP — not prose we then try to parse. Long recordings are split into chunks and merged, with every decision re-attached to the step it belongs to. If the answer covers only part of what you recorded, Steptree rejects it and asks again rather than handing you a quarter of a procedure that looks complete.

    Minutes, not hours. You get a draft, never a published document.

  3. You correct the bits only you would know

    It arrives as an ordinary editable document: fix a step, drop a screenshot, add the caveat you forgot to log, reorder anything. Then approve it. Its owner, a manager of its team or an admin can publish it.

    Nothing reaches your team until a person presses approve.

  4. Your team follows it

    It sits in one library, in folders, owned by a team. Keep it private, share it with that team, or make a link anyone can open without signing in. Members of the team can comment on it.

    On the free plan a public page carries a small Made with Steptree footer.

  5. Your AI reads it

    Connect Claude over MCP, the standard AI tools use to connect, and it can search and read every SOP in your library. In the Steptree App, Steptree AI answers from your SOPs, and can do the steps with you on your computer, asking before each action.

    On every plan, the free one included. Each person connects with their own key.

  6. And, if you want, a skill file or an agent

    Any SOP compiles to SKILL.md: YAML at the top, markdown below, in the open agent-skill format. A linter checks it before it is published, and it downloads on any plan. From your skills you can build an agent that does the job, with the tools you allow and the limits you set.

    Optional. An agent is a draft too, and runs when you deploy it, not before.

Nothing is published until a person approves it

Every SOP is created as a draft, and so is every skill and agent built from one. Nothing reaches your team until somebody has read it and said yes. That is not a setting that can be switched off — it is how Steptree is built.

Goal

Get the accounts and the payment system to agree to the cent, with every difference either explained or passed on, before the 3rd.

Steps

Decision point

A gap over $500 that isn't just a timing difference — Send it to the controller instead of writing it off. At that size it has usually happened before.

Things to know

The provider's report uses UTC and the accounts use local time, so the last few hours of the month always look unmatched on the first pass.

The decision block and the note are the two things a click-trail cannot see, and they explain why, not just what happened. Each is stored as its own kind of content rather than buried in a step. That is why a new starter following this SOP knows the $500 rule exists, and why your AI can tell them about it when they ask.

Asked at this stage

How long does the first one take?
As long as the job takes, plus a few minutes to read what came back. There is no script to write and nothing to narrate — you do the work at normal speed with the recorder on. Most people have an approved SOP the same afternoon, and you can do it on the free plan with no card (2 recordings included).
What if the SOP it writes is wrong?
You edit it, like any document. That is why nothing publishes itself: the draft is a first pass by something that watched you work, and you are the person who knows which bits matter. Most corrections are a sentence, not a rewrite.
Do I have to record anything to get started?
No. You can write an SOP or a skill from a blank page, and a hand-written skill is checked and capped exactly like a generated one. Recording is simply the fastest way in, and the only one that captures the screenshots for you.
What happens to a process that changes?
Record the job again and you have a new draft to approve in minutes, or edit the page directly. Only its owner, a manager of its team or an admin can edit it.
Can two people work on the same SOP?
Yes. Whoever wrote it, a manager of its team or an admin can edit it, and members of its team can comment on it. Approval is a deliberate act by somebody who has the right to make it.
